A Movement Building Toolkit

Our City Movement Building team has launched its "Movement Building Toolkit". This free resource offers a range of tools, ideas, prompts and questions for organisers. We hope you will find it useful in your work building organisations and communities that reflect the sort of world we want to live in.

The first section explores what a movement is (and isn’t!), followed by sections looking at allyship and the ladder of participation - a tool to help us think about how people become active members of our organisations. The conflict in groups section explores the impact of conflict and how we can transform our relationship with it. Embedding climate justice asks us to consider how our movements reflect the impact of climate change on marginalised communities around the world. The section on trust invites reflections on building deep, trusting relationships between individuals and organisations. Finally, the sections on effective and empowering meetings and resilience offer practical ideas on creating spaces that are inviting, welcoming and regenerative.

Some of the material is quite conceptual, featuring ideas and prompts to encourage deeper and more creative thinking about what movements are and what our role as movement builders is. Other parts are more practical, offering guidance and advice on what movement building looks like in practical, day-to-day activities. This is because as movement builders we need to be able to think creatively about our strategic direction and purpose, while also knowing how to make our spaces inviting, comfortable, and engaging for people wanting to take action with us.
