Community causes flourishing

Groups across the city delivered all sorts of fantastic projects with support from Climate Action Leeds. What went on near you?

Bees in Beeston, more green space in Morley, healthy choices in Halton ... people all around Leeds have boosted their neighbourhoods with support from Climate Action Leeds (CAL) and Leeds Community Foundation.

You can now read about community groups' achievements in a set of stories and stats gathered by the Community Foundation, which show that almost 10,000 people took part in projects which received National Lottery funding via CAL.

More than £130,000 was shared between 41 initiatives, with results showing that hundreds of people felt more belonging in their community, improved wellbeing, and a sense of having learned new skills.

The project organisers' creative approaches brought people together and encouraged them to think about our environment from different angles.

This ranged from poetry connected to birds' habitats in Cross Gates, a fashion show with sustainable clothing in Harehills, and converting a derelict space in Armley into a community garden where people can learn about growing.

As well as the visible benefits in local spaces city wide, the positives for people who got involved were clear as well.

One example on the value of being outdoors came from Leeds Mindfulness Co-operative, who delivered their work in Seacroft Forest Garden.

A Mindfulness Co-operative worker said: “We noticed that participants who may have struggled with mindfulness practices and being in groups indoors were far more able to connect and engage with difficult experiences when supported in such a biodiverse green space."

If you're looking for inspiration on what can be done with even relatively small amounts of funding, take a look at the slides below for all the details.

Lastly, a huge well done to all the groups involved!
