Citizens in Leeds have been invited to give their views on the future of the city, in a Leeds City Council consultation running until the 15th September.
The consultation is for the Local Plan, running up to 2042. It is a major document that sets out how the city should develop in the next 17 years.
Climate Action Leeds have put together a handy guide to help people respond to the consultation questions.
The Council's consultation asks a number of questions on issues which will affect the future of the city.
This consultation is an important moment when people and organisations in Leeds can help steer the direction the city takes. It is therefore really important that lots of people make their voices heard - especially on environmental and social issues, where some may seek to take Leeds down an unsustainable path.
Respond to the Local Plan
Our response guide is underpinned by our collective mission to help Leeds become a zero carbon, nature friendly, socially just city.
The guide walks you through many of the questions contained in each of the 14 sections of the consultation. You are free to respond to as many or as few of the questions as you like.
Please use our recommended responses as much or as little as you wish to help shape your own responses.
Short on time? Choose one or two of the topics to answer - any response at all is better than no response. The more people who take the time to respond, the more robust the case will be for mandating the highest environmental standards for all development in the city.
The consultation website includes a video tutorial, which demonstrates step by step how to provide your response.
This guide was primarily written by Anzir Boodoo, City Plan Lead for Climate Action Leeds.
What is the Local Plan?
The Local Plan is a hugely important document which offers us a real opportunity to shape how our city develops over the next 17 years to 2042.
If the Council does not hear that its people want the very best standards in environmental sustainability, there is a risk that Leeds' policies will fail to address the climate and nature emergencies.
This means a Local Plan informed by environmental principles will push the Council to deliver on their commitments to tackling the climate emergency, and direct the future of Leeds' development in ways that are more favourable.
There has been a lot of development in Leeds which has been detrimental to the local environment, to the transport network, or which has not contributed positively to the city. The Council would like to change this, and for this, they need public support.
The Council has stated its positions on each issue in the consultation, and Climate Action Leeds is in support of most of them, but not all.
Spread the word
We want to reach as many people as we can, so it would be fantastic if you could help us spread the word by sharing our response guide.
